FREE WORKSHOP
Saturday December 8, 2012 from 1:00pm-3:00pm
Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame

A Community Sculpture Project inspired by the symbolism of armor and self, using the breastplate as a metaphor for community and the shield for individual voice.

Come join us on Saturday December 8, 2012 from 1:00pm-3:00pm for a free workshop at Finger Lakes Gallery and Frame. Create your own shield to add to the community breastplate. The shield will represent your self in some way such as family heritage, personal portrait, symbols, etc. Shields and art materials will be provided.

Any questions contact Kim Bellavia at belladrake@hotmail.com

Kim Bellavia 1 "As an artist the purpose of my work is to create form and contrasts to the notions of 'being.' I created a series of work titled Every Day Armor, which was inspired by the symbolism of armor and self. This work is mixed media breast plates, wall sculptures and paintings on wood. These pieces are portraits of my self and other people.

In history armor was used for protection the breastplate was a protective shell that protected all that is precious. The warriors’ armor was a statement to the world. Breast plates and shields were decorated with picture stories and statements about the beliefs and background of the warrior.

Through this work I procured a New York State Council of the Arts Individual artist grant to create a large breastplate, 5ft x 3ft, that is visible on both sides. This breast plate is a symbol of the community.

Kim Bellavia 3 Members of the community are invited to create a shield, representing their own voice to be attached to this breast plate. Art materials will be provided or participants can bring photocopies of pictures and images to use.

My objectives are to inspire individuals of the community using the visual arts media to create individual shields that represent themselves in some way such as family heritage, personal portraits, mythological and religious symbols, text, psychological, conceptual, etc." -- Kim Bellavia
